Selective Pallet Racking Capacity Calculation Guide

When planning a warehouse, knowing the required Selective Pallet Racking Capacity is important for choosing the right rack specifications and maximizing available storage space.

The calculation is not based on rack size alone.Pallet dimensions, load weight, beam capacity, rack height, and warehouse layout all need to be considered.

How to Calculate Pallet Racking Capacity?

A simple way to estimate total storage capacity is:

Total Pallet Capacity=Number of Rack Bays×Pallet Positions per Bay×Number of Storage Levels

For example,if a warehouse has:

20 rack bays

2 pallets per level

5 storage levels

The estimated capacity would be:

20×2×5=200 pallet positions

This gives you a basic estimate before detailed warehouse design.

What Affects Selective Pallet Racking Capacity?

1.Pallet Size

Pallet dimensions determine the required rack depth and beam length.Common pallet sizes include 1200×1000 mm and 1200×800 mm,but the rack should always be designed according to the actual pallet specifications.

2.Load Weight

The weight of each pallet directly affects the required beam and upright specifications.

For example,a system designed for 1,000 kg per pallet will have different structural requirements from one designed for 2,000 kg per pallet.

3.Rack Height

Increasing the number of storage levels can significantly increase pallet capacity without increasing the warehouse footprint. However, the available building height and forklift lifting height must be considered.

4.Aisle Width

Aisle width affects how many rack rows can fit into the warehouse.

Standard selective pallet racking provides excellent pallet accessibility, but wider forklift aisles can reduce overall storage density.

Selective Pallet Racking Capacity Example

Suppose a warehouse uses:

20 bays×2 pallets per level×5 levels

The total capacity is:

200 pallet positions

If the warehouse adds one more storage level:

20×2×6=240 pallet positions

This simple example shows why warehouse height is an important factor when increasing storage capacity.

Why Professional Rack Design Matters

Capacity calculations should not only consider the number of pallet positions.Rack load capacity, upright strength, beam capacity, floor conditions, forklift specifications, and local safety requirements also need to be evaluated.

HLD Intelligent Equipment provides customized Selective Pallet Racking Systems, including warehouse layout planning,CAD drawings, load calculations, rack manufacturing, and project support.

If you need to calculate your warehouse pallet racking capacity, send us your warehouse dimensions, pallet size, pallet weight, and required storage height. Our engineering team can help develop a suitable racking solution.
